Program Identity & Fit

Marshfield Clinic's Dermatology Residency is a small, categorical four-year program (including an internal internship year) rooted in a rural, community-based tertiary health system in central Wisconsin, one of the oldest continuously running dermatology training programs in the country. Clinical training spans general medical, pediatric, and Mohs surgery clinics alongside dermatopathology and inpatient consultation, with all four training years completed within Marshfield Clinic Health System and support from the large Marshfield Clinic Research Institute. Research is a required, structured component—residents select a mentor and project by January of intern year and are expected to carry it through to publication—reflecting the institution's broader identity as a community-embedded academic health system with substantial in-house research infrastructure. The program explicitly emphasizes clinical mentorship, broad-spectrum disease exposure, progressive autonomy, and a philosophy oriented toward producing well-rounded general dermatologists rather than narrow subspecialists.
