About Externship for IMGs Program

IMGprep has developed hands-on externship rotations for international medical graduates (imgs) that are designed to give you the U.S. clinical experience (USCE) you need to transition into US-based healthcare. Through carefully designed objectives and performance guidelines that revolve around individual medical specialties, we help our applicants become acclimated to our healthcare system.

Once you have completed an IMGprep clinical rotation, you will receive a performance evaluation from your preceptor. You will also be given an individual letter of recommendation that details your level of competency and the extent of your medical knowledge. Letters of Recommendation will reflect your clinical acumen and readiness to begin residency, and are a key component of all residency applications.

While we understand that each applicant is unique, participation in the IMGPrep medical externship for IMG program requires the following:

  • Each applicant must provide immunization Records showing current inoculations for Hepatitis B, MMR, and Tetanus.
  • Each applicant must provide proof of a negative PPD results within the previous 12 months. If the applicant’s skin test is positive, we require proof of a negative chest X-ray reading completed within the U.S. during the past 12 months.
  • Each applicant must provide proof of a completed criminal background check. A criminal background check may be obtained online or by a visit to your local police department.

Does your medical externship program for IMGs provide complete liability insurance?

You must carry liability insurance when participating in an Externship for IMG in USA. IMGPrep provides a complete liability insurance policy for each of our clients. We will also provide you with the insurance company name and a direct contact that you can speak with if you have questions. Your policy can begin in as little as two weeks. When you enroll in the Externship program with IMGPrep, you will receive a copy of your own, individualized policy.


What kind of attending physicians do you work with?

IMGPrep works exclusively with attending physicians who provide hands on clinical experience for IMGs. All attending physicians are affiliated with a U.S. medical school, teaching hospital or residency program.


Can I speak with an Extern who has rotated before me?

IMGPrep will gladly provide you with contact information for previous clients who have participated in our program. We encourage you to ask questions.


Is my U.S. clinical rotation considered U.S. clinical experience?

IMGPrep only places our externs into hands-on clinical rotations that provide experience you need to receive a quality letter of recommendation for residency placement.
