Questions to Ask When Selecting a Residency Placement Service Provider

With so many choices in postgraduate medical placement services, how can you know which service is right for you? We have compiled some questions that you can use when researching your options.

Q: Does your program provide complete medical malpractice insurance?
A: You must carry medical malpractice insurance when working in the United States. Be sure to ask questions about the policy you will receive. You should be provided with the name of the insurance company and their contact information and should know exactly how much coverage you will have.

IMGPrep provides a complete medical liability insurance policy for each of our clients. We will also provide you with the insurance company name and a direct contact that you can speak with if you have questions. Your policy can begin in as little as two weeks.

Q: What requirements do I have to meet to receive placement with your program?
A: Each applicant must provide:
  1. Immunization Records - must have all the following: Immunity to Hep. B, MMR and Tetanus
  2. Negative PPD results in the past 12 months. If your skin test is positive, we require a report of a negative chest X-ray reading done in the US in the past 12 months.
  3. A complete criminal background check (a quick and easy process that can be accomplished online or by your local Police Dept.) Additional Information

Q: What kind of attending physicians do you work with?
A: In order for your letter of recommendation to carry the most weight with residency program directors, you must complete your externship with a teaching, attending physician. IMGPrep works exclusively with attending physicians who provide hands-on experience for medical graduates. All attending physicians are affiliated with a U.S. medical school, teaching hospital or residency program.

Q: Can I speak with an extern who has rotated before me?
A: IMGPrep will gladly provide you with contact information for previous clients who have participated in our program. We encourage you to ask questions.

Q: Is my rotation considered U.S. clinical experience?
A: It is critical that you receive hands-on experience during your externship. Under no circumstances should you accept an observership program since the majority of residency programs do not consider these to be sufficient experience.

IMGPrep only places medical graduates with programs that provide rotations and the real experience you need to receive a quality recommendation for residency placement. Make sure that you do not waste your time or money by completing an externship that is simply an observation of medical practices.

Q: How big is your database and how current is the information?
A: Though there are many databases of residency programs available, many are incomplete and out-dated. IMGPrep maintains a premium database of every residency program in the country and we update our data continuously. We can cut your application time in half by providing quality information that you won't find anywhere else.
